Old Town Residential, Dubai
Downtown, Dubai, UAE
The Old Town Residential is part of the greater masterplan of Dubai’s Old Town Commercial Island, designed with a deliberately human scale and is an interpretation of traditional Arabic town architecture. It emulates a thriving neighbourhood of meandering public walkways and private inner courtyards, paying homage to the region’s foundation.
The vision was to integrate the project with the greater community, whilst still giving privacy to its residents. Open pedestrian walkways are strategically placed throughout the development, allowing easy movement between buildings and tying various commercial and retail activities together at ground level, while the residential zones are confined to the upper levels for privacy.
The concept behind the development drew inspiration from vernacular town planning, where people can seamlessly “live-work-play” within the same precinct. By incorporating elements of traditional Arabic architecture and design, it creates a sense of place that reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region while also meeting contemporary needs for urban living.
